New Mills Natural History Society

New Mills Natural History Society now has a Facebook Page with details of its of upcoming events

The society has been active since 1969: a friendly group of people interested in observing and studying all kinds of local plant and animal wildlife.

At least twice a month on different days of the week there are ‘field meetings’. These usually take the form of walks led by various members. They are a wonderful way to discover new places of interest in our area and to improve your nature knowledge. You don’t have to be super fit to keep up. If you have suitable footwear, able to walk up to four or five miles and can manage a stile, you will be fine. The pace is usually slow, with frequent pauses as things of interest are found. People taking part usually meet at 10.00am in front of the Town Hall and, unless the walk is very local, share cars before driving (usually quite short distances) to the location being visited.

Indoor meetings happen at 7.30pm in the Town Hall from September to April, usually on the third Friday of the month. These usually feature visiting speakers on a huge variety of nature-related topics, usually with truly wonderful photos projected on the screen – non members (including well-behaved children 🙂 ) are welcome for a fee of £2.

There is a full list of upcoming events on the New Mills Natural History Society Facebook Page.

If you are interested in joining, or would like to find out more, you can email the chairman, John Hawksford on or just drop in on some walks or talks. You will be made extremely welcome and you can discover what you have been missing all these years!
