WALK 8: THE MILLS OF NEWTOWN

Distance 1.5 miles(one way) – Time – approx. 1 hour

Embark on a journey through New Mills’ industrial past with a guided walk, exploring historic mill sites like Torr Vale Mill, Grove Mill, and the beautifully restored Art Theatre.

Each site offers a glimpse into the town’s rich heritage, from candlewick manufacture to sweet production. Wander through the charming streets to discover Woodside Mill, Victoria Mill, and the former sweet factory, Brunswick Mill. Marvel at the recent renovations of New Mills Marina, now home to holiday cottages and Torrside Brewing.

Conclude your exploration at Redmoor Mill, where cotton doubling once thrived, now housing a variety of businesses. For further insights, delve into books like “The Mills of New Mills” by John V. Symonds and “Cotton Mills and Printworks on the River Goyt and its Tributaries” by Stephen Lewis. Experience the history and charm of New Mills as you stroll through its industrial heritage.
