WALK 9: THE MILLS OF NEW MILLS

Distance 2.5 miles – Time – approx. 1.5 hours

Explore the historic mills of New Mills on a captivating stroll through its industrial past.

Begin your journey at Rock Mill Road, where remnants of Rock Mill 1 stand as a testament to its former glory. Follow the riverside path, passing Torr Mill 2’s ruins and marveling at the Torrs Hydro community scheme. Cross the Millward Memorial Bridge to Ned Mill’s former site, before retracing your steps to Barnes Top Mill and its viewing platform. Traverse Hyde Bank Road to the site of Beard Mill, now converted into apartments. Ascend a path near the cemetery, crossing the Sett Valley Trail and reaching St. George’s Works.

Follow the trail further, veering left through an industrial estate to London Place Mill, once featured in a BBC drama. Conclude your journey by returning to the town center via Bridge Street and Spring Bank. Immerse yourself in New Mills’ industrial heritage with this informative and scenic walk.
