‘Handy for the Hills’ has long been a phrase synonymous with New Mills and has long been an attraction for those that go running in the hills around New Mills.
We are spoilt for choice with routes up past The Fox Inn at Brookbottom towards Mellor Cross, up and around Lantern Pike towards Rowarth or up Laneside or past The Grouse Pub towards Big Stone and beyond to the wilds of the Kinder Plateau – if hills aren’t your forte then there is always the flat Sett Valley Trail or the Peak Forest Canal which has an excellent surface from Swizzels to the Navigation Inn at Bugsworth Basin (about 10km there and back)
This year Visit New Mills in conjunction with Crazy Legs Events are hosting three New Mills based races with teh first one ‘Fox Cross Four’ taking place on 4 May starting at The Fox Inn at Brookbottom – 100+ took part in last years first running of the event, which takes in some fantastic scenery (and hills) around New Mills Golf Club and Mellor Cross finishing back at The Fox Inn in time for a pint and some sausage and bacon sandwiches.
The next races in the series are The New Mills Carnival race and the Hairy Dog Six.
