Cycling

Given its stunning location in the shadow of Kinder Scout, the cornucopia of public rights of way that criss-cross the surrounding area, the terrain that varies from steep & rocky tracks to open and remote moorland to quiet lanes lined with hedgerow and gritstone, the ‘stop you in your tracks’ views that take in the immediate beauty of the High Peak but also remote vistas as far away as the Cheshire Plains, North Wales, it sometimes seems that New Mills as a cycling destination is a well kept secret.

New Mills is a small, bustling town with a heart of gold and a strong community. Getting here is easy. By car we’re not far from Stockport and the M60, we’re about a 45 minute drive from Sheffield and we have two! train stations; New Mills Central is on the Manchester-Sheffield line; New Mills Newtown is serviced by the Stockport-Buxton line. There are plenty of places to stay when you arrive, see VNM places to stay page. If you’re in a motorhome or campervan park up at the Caravan Club site at the marina where there are full facilities available (electric, water, WiFi, showers) or if you’re in a group use the Bike Shed bunkhouse also at New Mills Marina (sleeps 10).

The MTB scene in New Mills is diverse. You can ride loops of trails that take in Mellor and Roman Lakes and Rowarth and never be more than 30ish minutes from where you started, or pedal further afield to take in the delights around Kinder and out towards Chunal & Glossop. You can set up base camp in New Mills and ride out and back to Hope Valley or Edale, but if you don’t fancy your chances with those big rides jump on the train and get off at Edale or Hope and ride back to New Mills.
