Let the train take the strain

Update : over 1100 of you have signed the petition so far and we are looking to arrange a meeting with Northern to discuss how the services into New Mills can be improved – take a look

Cuts to rail services have led to protests from passengers who use the New Mills to Piccadilly line. A petition has gathered almost 1000 signatures in just five days, asking Northern Rail to reinstate a full timetable along the line, particularly at peak times.

The petition was started by Claire Vibert, a local campaigner, who says: “I use the line regularly myself, and have been speaking to a lot of fellow passengers lately who are fed up with the gaps in services – I wanted to do something to show the rail company that the cuts are having a real impact on their customers. I know this is really affecting lots of people who live in New Mills and the wider High Peak area.”

Passengers have left comments on the petition, complaining that they can no longer get home in time to collect children, or that their commuting time has increased by up to an hour as a result of the cuts. Others have highlighted that reducing train services encourages more people to use their cars. Claire has been highlighting the campaign on social media and by leafleting commuters at New Mills Station.
